A magazine about someone you love is one of the most personal gifts you can give. And you don't need to be a designer to make one. With a good template and Canva, it comes down to six simple steps.
Step 1: Pick who it's for and the occasion
Everything else follows from this. A magazine for mom's 60th has a different feel than one for your best friend's birthday or your anniversary. Choose a template that already fits: for mom, for dad, for her or for couples.
Step 2: Collect stories and photos
This is the heart of the magazine. Ask family and friends a few questions and ask them to send photos. Give them a week or two. The free questionnaire has a ready-made list, and you'll find 40 more ideas in what to write in a personalized magazine.
Tip: save everything in one folder on your phone or laptop. It makes the next step much faster.
Step 3: Open the template in Canva
After buying an Atelier Buba template, the Canva link lands in your inbox right away. Open it and Canva makes a copy in your own account, so you can always come back to it later. A free Canva account is all you need, on your phone or laptop.
Step 4: Add your photos
Upload your photos in Canva, then drag them onto a photo frame in the template. They snap into place. Double-click a photo to move or zoom it inside the frame.
- Use the sharpest version of each photo you can find.
- Old printed photos? Scan them, or take a photo of them in daylight without flash.
- Mix posed photos with candid ones. The funny, imperfect shots often get the biggest reactions.
Step 5: Write and edit the texts
Click any text to replace it with your own. Keep stories short and personal: a few sentences per memory reads better than a long essay. You can change texts, colors and fonts, or keep the design exactly as it is.
Need more or fewer pages? In Canva you can duplicate, delete and reorder pages freely.
Step 6: Download and print
When you're happy, click Share → Download and choose PDF Print for the sharpest result. Then print it at home, order it through Canva Print, or bring the file to a local print shop. Read more in how to print your Canva magazine.
A few tips from me
- Start with the cover. A great cover photo sets the tone for everything else.
- Save the emotional pages for last. Let the magazine build up to the heartfelt messages.
- Proofread once on paper. Typos are easier to spot in print than on a screen.
- Watch them read it. Honestly, that's the best part.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make a magazine in Canva for free?
Yes. Atelier Buba templates work with a free Canva account. You only pay for the template and, if you like, for printing.
Can I edit the magazine on my phone?
Yes, in the Canva app. A laptop is a bit easier for longer texts, but everything works on your phone too.
How long does it take?
Collecting the stories usually takes the longest. Filling in the template takes an evening or two, depending on how many pages you use.
